American deaths in the Iraq War

March 25, 2008

It has been widely reported that 4,000 American service personnel have now been killed in Iraq. What has not been so widely reported is that 80% of those killed where white but that is the figure the Voice of America broadcast today. 10% of those killed were Blacks and the remaining 10% were Hispanics and other races.

There has been a major decline in the number of Blacks enlisting in the US military in these early years of the 21st century. In 2000 the enlistment rate of Blacks was 20% while today it is under 15%.

The rate of disease in the black community means many potential soldiers may not be fit physically for military service. Also the rate of incarceration may also impact the enlistment of blacks in today’s military. A study by the Justice Policy Institute shows that the number of black men in prisons increased from 143,000 in 1980 to 791,600 in 2000.

Military statistics show that there are smaller percentages of blacks in the elite corps and the infantry.

In March 2005 the New York Times in a chart reported that 72.5% of deaths were of whites against 67% of all military enlisted while Black deaths were 10.9% against 18.6% of all enlisted.

Clearly in the intervening 3 years white deaths have risen significantly and Black deaths have fallen slightly.
